Hoan Kiem Lake (Turtle Lake)
A Serene Oasis in the Heart of Hanoi

The picturesque Hoan Kiem Lake is the perfect starting point for any Hanoi itinerary. Nestled in the heart of the city, this tranquil oasis offers a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Known as the "Lake of the Returned Sword," Hoan Kiem Lake holds immense cultural and historical significance, captivating both locals and tourists alike.
Hoan Kiem Lake is steeped in legend and folklore, making it an integral part of Hanoi's heritage. According to the legend, Emperor Le Loi was given a magical sword by a divine turtle to fight against the Chinese Ming Dynasty. After the victory, the emperor returned the sword to the lake, giving it its name. Today, the lake symbolizes the resilience and indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people.
A prominent landmark situated on a small island in the lake, Thap Rua, also known as Turtle Tower, adds an enchanting touch to Hoan Kiem Lake. The tower, shaped like a turtle, pays homage to the legendary creature that played a crucial role in the lake's history.

Connected to the mainland by the iconic red-painted Huc Bridge, Ngoc Son Temple is another highlight of Hoan Kiem Lake. This picturesque temple honours national heroes and important figures in Vietnamese history. As you wander through its ornate gates and peaceful courtyards, you'll discover exquisite statues, ancient artefacts, and most importantly- stunning views of the lake.

Hoan Kiem Lake also offers a scenic walking path that encircles its perimeter, allowing you to soak in the serene atmosphere and beauty. As you stroll along the lakeshore, you'll witness the locals practising Tai Chi, and families enjoying a day out at the lake. The ambience is truly serene, offering a much-needed escape from the urban chaos.
While not directly on the lake, the path that surrounds it has a number of significant buildings and hotspots, such as the majestic Hanoi Opera House and St. Andrews Church. I would highly recommend making time in the morning to take a leisurely stroll around the edge, it's a great way to get familiar with the Vietnamese lifestyle.
Hanoi Train Street
When it comes to unique travel experiences, Hanoi's Train Street takes the cake! If you're an avid traveller seeking an adrenaline rush, this not-so-hidden gem is a must-visit. Tucked away in the narrow alleys of the city, Train Street offers an exhilarating encounter with passing trains just inches away. Get ready to feel the rush and capture some incredible Instagram-worthy moments!

Imagine standing on a narrow street, sipping on your Vietnamese coffee, when suddenly, a massive train comes roaring through! That's the thrill of Train Street. This lively neighbourhood is built so close to the railway tracks that you can practically touch the trains as they whiz by. It's an awe-inspiring experience that will get your heart racing and make for some unforgettable memories.

For the avid traveller and photography enthusiast, Train Street is a goldmine of visual delights. As the train approaches, locals and tourists scramble to move their chairs, tables, and even their flower pots off the tracks to make way for the roaring locomotive. Capturing this unique scene on camera is an absolute must, as the chaos of daily life and the raw power of the train creates an incredible visual spectacle.

Train Street also offers a unique glimpse into the daily lives of Hanoi's residents. As you explore the narrow alleyways, you'll witness locals going about their routines, unfazed by the passing trains. From children playing to shop owners skillfully manoeuvring their wares, this vibrant neighbourhood provides an authentic insight into the local way of life. Interacting with friendly residents can also add a personal touch to your experience.
To make the most of your visit to Train Street, timing is crucial. Trains usually pass through twice a day, and it's essential to check the schedule in advance. Locals and friendly cafe owners in the area can provide valuable insights on the train timings, ensuring you don't miss out on the adrenaline-fueled action. Remember, patience is key, as delays are not uncommon, but the excitement of witnessing a train thunder through the narrow street is well worth the wait!

While Train Street is the star of the show, don't forget to explore the surrounding area. The quaint cafes, street food stalls, and bustling markets nearby offer a delightful taste of Hanoi's local cuisine and vibrant atmosphere. Take a leisurely stroll, savour a delicious banh mi sandwich, or sample some freshly brewed Vietnamese iced coffee to complete your adventure off the beaten path.
Temple of Literature
Vietnam's Academic Legacy

Embark on a captivating journey through Vietnam's rich academic history at the Temple of Literature. This site is the country's first national university, and its serene surroundings offer a peaceful retreat from the bustling city. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a culture lover, or simply seeking inspiration, the Temple of Literature promises an enriching experience that will leave you in awe.
As you enter the Temple, you'll find yourself transported back to the 11th century, a time when Confucian teachings and education thrived in Vietnam. The grand architecture, traditional courtyards, and ancient stone steles create an ambience of reverence and wisdom.

The Temple of Literature stands as a testament to Vietnam's intellectual legacy and the enduring value placed on education. Whether you're captivated by history, seeking inner peace, or simply curious about Vietnamese culture, the Temple of Literature offers a profound experience that will leave an indelible mark on your Hanoi itinerary.
Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum
You can find one of Vietnam's greatest heroes at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Hanoi. If you're seeking a unique cultural experience, this is a must-visit spot. Step into the world of Ho Chi Minh, fondly known as "Uncle Ho," and discover the legacy of the man who played a pivotal role in Vietnam's struggle for independence.

The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum stands tall and is surrounded by pristine gardens. The grandeur of the mausoleum reflects the deep respect and admiration the Vietnamese people have for their beloved leader.
You also have the option to enter the mausoleum and you'll have the opportunity to pay your respects to Ho Chi Minh himself. Take a moment to observe the preserved body of Uncle Ho, lying peacefully in state. It's a powerful and humbling experience to be in the presence of a man who dedicated his life to the liberation of Vietnam and the well-being of its people.
The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is situated in Ba Dinh Square, the heart of Hanoi. This square witnessed pivotal moments in Vietnam's struggle for independence, including the reading of the Declaration of Independence by Ho Chi Minh in 1945. Take a stroll around the square, soak in the atmosphere, and imagine the spirit of the revolution that once ignited this place.

You'll also find peaceful gardens that surround the complex. So you can take a leisurely walk amidst the beautiful landscape and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. It was over 40 degrees at the time I visited, so I found myself jumping from tree to tree to be covered by the very limited shade here.
Dong Xuan Market

If you're a traveller who loves hunting for bargains, this bustling market is an absolute must-visit. Dong Xuan Market is a shopping extravaganza that will leave you with a shopping bag full of treasures and memories to cherish.
Dong Xuan Market is a shopaholic's ultimate playground. From trendy clothing and accessories to traditional handicrafts, you'll find it all under one roof. Get ready to haggle like a pro as you navigate through the maze of stalls, searching for the perfect souvenirs and unique finds.
One of the best things about Dong Xuan Market is the opportunity to score incredible bargains. Whether you're looking for stylish clothes, quirky home decor, or local snacks, you'll find items at prices that won't break the bank. Remember to embrace the art of bargaining to secure the best deals. I had a very interesting experience of playing rock, paper, scissors over the price of some fridge magnets! Understand that bargaining is accepted and welcomed here, don't be afraid to get involved!

However, Dong Xuan is not just about shopping; it's also a haven for food lovers. When you need a break from exploring the stalls, dive into the street food scene within the market. Indulge in mouthwatering Vietnamese delicacies like pho, banh mi, or fresh spring rolls. Follow your nose.
Water Puppet Theatre
Water puppetry is an ancient Vietnamese art form that dates back centuries, and the Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi is the perfect place to experience it. Here you can watch a performance of puppets gliding gracefully on the surface of a shimmering pool of water, accompanied by live traditional music. It might not sound tasteful to some, but it's a fantastic way to experience Vietnamese culture and legends. I was hesitant at finding too, but I wouldn't include it on this itinerary if I didn't believe it was worth your time!

The puppet shows often depict scenes from rural life, historical events, and mythical tales. Through the lively performances, you'll gain insights into Vietnam's rich folklore and the stories that have been passed down through generations.
One of the highlights of the Water Puppet Theatre experience is the interaction between the puppets and the audience. Don't be surprised if you find yourself clapping along or even getting a chance to participate in the show. The interactive nature of the performances adds an extra layer of fun and spontaneity, ensuring that every show is unique and full of surprises.
Also, the Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi is conveniently located right beside Hoan Kiem Lake.

Bia Hoi Corner
Hanoi's Bia Hoi Corner and Walking Streets are the ultimate destinations to indulge in delicious street food, vibrant ambience, and a lively atmosphere.

Bia Hoi Corner is a vibrant street corner in the heart of Hanoi, where locals and travellers alike gather to unwind, socialize, and enjoy a refreshing glass of bia hoi – the iconic Vietnamese draft beer. Picture yourself sitting on tiny plastic stools, surrounded by a buzzing crowd. It's the perfect spot to mingle, make new friends, and soak up the infectious energy of the city. Especially after a full day of exploring.

In this same area, you'll be also able to explore the walking streets (streets not accessible to vehicles and filled with small, cheap bars, restaurants and food stands).
Walking Streets are a sensory overload in the best possible way. The vibrant colours, the sizzling sounds of street food being cooked, and the mouthwatering aromas that waft through the air create a wild atmosphere.
